WHERE

The Historic McCarren Park Pool in Greenpoint/Williamsburg, Brooklyn (Main arch entrance)

(Lorimer st. between Driggs & Bayard) Take L train to Lorimer or Bedford; G train to Metropolitan.

WHAT

AGORA brings together into the empty pool a cast of hundreds including appearances by guest groups/performers STREB, Young Dance Collective, Radiohole, Radical Cheerleaders, Malcolm and the Hoop Entourage, Reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping, Julie Atlas Muz, Critical Mass, Breakskru, Daria Fain/Human Behavior Explorers, Celeste Hastings and the Butoh Rockettes, The Colors, Jacob Robinette, and Johanna Meyer in addition to a group of 60 independent performers. All will be mapping and layering visceral narratives of urban life inside the vast pool basin. Original score is by Brooks Williams and Norm Scott, with live sound directed by Bora Yoon and lighting design is by Thomas Dunn.

With AGORA II, choreographer and producer Noémie Lafrance continues her exploration of the McCarren Park pool as a public site to stage innovative performance work. Expressed as one large breath, AGORA II further explores treatments of the pool site’s architecture combined with ideas of collectivity, layering strokes of audience interventions, evolving characters and cameo appearances by guest artists, creating a grand tableau – a city slice – a social experiment.

WHO

SENS is a nonprofit organization that creates and produces site-specific work in man-made landscapes using urban architecture as inspiration and setting. SENS/Noémie Lafrance has created and produced adventurous works in a variety of NYC landscapes, including Noir (2004), part of the Whitney Biennial, staged in the Essex Municipal Parking Garage, and Descent (2001-2003), performed in the stairwell of the City Court Building Clock Tower, and Migrations (2005), a commission of the Whitney Museum of American Art at Altria.

SENS/Noémie Lafrance has continued to devote resources to improving the McCarren Park pool site and develop the possibilities for reclaiming a public space that was long abandoned and unusable. Since its transformation last September, the spectacular site is rapidly attracting the interest of artists, locals, and concert promoters...  SENS envisions the pool site as the perfect location from which to create a yearly site-specific festival emerging from the boundless cultural effervescence of the Greenpoint/Williamsburg community.

AGORA II is funded in parts by

Our audience, the Businesses and community of Greenpoint/Williamsburg, Altria Group, Inc., Con Edison, The Leon Levy Foundation and The Quebec government house in New York.
